Experts give tips to help treat pregnancy skin problems -- from acne to 'pregnancy mask.'
By Colette Bouchez
It isn't just an old wives' tale -- it's really true. A woman can look most ravishing during pregnancy. Well ... make that some women.
Indeed, while pregnancy can leave some lucky ladies looking luscious, for others, all that extra hormonal activity can have the opposite effect, causing a variety of pregnancy skin problems.
"Hands down, acne is the No. 1 skin problem to hit women during pregnancy -- but there are also a variety of bumps and rashes and discolorations that occur as well, most of them due to hormone activity," says Ellen Marmur, MD, chief of dermatologic and cosmetic surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.
Moreover, you might also find that at least some of the tried and true beauty products you relied on to keep your skin glowing before pregnancy are unsafe to use after baby is on board.
But fear not -- help is on the way! With just a few small changes to your grooming routine, you can get the glow going and join the ranks of the some the world's most beautiful pregnant divas!
Pregnancy Acne: What to Do
Even if it's been years since you've seen a zit, don't be surprised if pregnancy brings out a bumper crop, particularly around your mouth and chin.
"These are the most common areas for acne to occur during pregnancy, and if you don't treat it right away, it will continue until you deliver, and sometimes even after baby is born," says Marmur.
Although some over-the-counter preparations can help, dermatologist Sumayah Jamal, MD, PhD, says you must choose wisely.
"You should not use any products that contain benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, or any of the retinoids. They are not safe to use during pregnancy," says Jamal, an assistant clinical professor of dermatology and microbiology at NYU Medical Center in New York City.
What you can try, she says, are sulphur-based topical products, as well as those containing glycolic acid or alpha hydroxy acids, or any at-home microdermabrasion treatment.
If these don't help, says Jamal, there are topical prescription drugs that offer good results. "These include erythromycin cream and azelaic acid -- both very safe to use during pregnancy."
And while Jamal does not advise using oral antibiotics for acne during pregnancy, Marmur says for patients who don't get results with topical treatments, prescription oral erythromycin is considered safe to use.
"It should not cause a problem, and if your acne is really making you miserable, this can help," she says.
What also works: switching to a foundation for oily skin, or using loose powder mineral makeup. Both have oil-blotting properties and won't irritate skin with acne.
"You can also use a mattifying product underneath your makeup to soak up excess oil, or dab your face with blotting papers during the day to help remove excess oil," says Jamal.

If you are unhappy with how gravity, the sun and everything else seems to be changing your skin's appearance, here are some tips and facts from DermatologyCare .CA that will assist you:
Anti-Aging Skin Care Tips and Facts:
* EXERCISE: Although exercise is vital to your health and great skin, it won't change the structure of your skin as it gets older. The look of your skin is determined mostly by genetics and sun exposure.
* COSMETICS: As you age you need to use both lighter colored cosmetics and lighter hair colors. These are more flattering to your skin tone and can keep you looking and feeling younger.
* MENOPAUSE: As you go through menopause, it's very common to find that the skincare products you once relied on are no longer as effective. For example, the hormonal changes associated with menopause often leave skin feeling drier than before. Try a richer moisturizer to see if it makes a difference.
* SUNBEDS: Contrary to popular belief, sunbeds are not a safer way to tan. Sunbeds emit UVA rays and causing tanning and aging of the skin .They may also be important in the development of melanoma. * LIPSTICK: Did you know that your lipstick helps your lips look younger and protects them? It's true. Using lipstick, helps protect your lips from harmful rays. It's one of the reasons men are more apt to get lip cancer - so men slap on the lip protection!
* YOUR EYES: Don't forget your eyes! Long-term sun exposure can lead to cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. So as you head out the door, be sure to grab your sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, or both!
* WATER: Drinking water is not enough! While many people believe that drinking a lot of water will help keep their skin smooth and supple, in truth, water consumption has only a small effect. A better approach to keeping your skin at its best is to drink plenty of water and use a moisturizer daily.
* SLEEP: Get your beauty rest! It's actually true - a good night's sleep is one of the best ways to keep your skin looking its best. For a healthy and glowing complexion, get plenty of sleep, maintain a well-balanced diet and exercise regularly.

1. Simplify
Don't be fooled by cosmetic advertising: Myriad creams, lotions, and potions at the drugstore and cosmetics counter make promises they could never deliver on. (Trust us, all the fancy products in the world will never turn the tide of aging.) Eye creams, for instance, rarely vary in formulation from your basic facial moisturizer. Our recommendation is to keep it simple: All you need is a basic cleanser, toner, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen to keep your skin in tip-top shape. Everything else is just dressing.
2. Make Sure "Natural" Is Really Natural
Toxic synthetic chemicals are the biggest issue in the beauty industry today, so it pays to hone a keen eye when it comes to examining product labels. For example, it’s counterintuitive, but unfortunately, the words "natural" and "all-natural" are not regulated labeling terms. Our "Getting Techie" section provides a glossary of some of the most problematic ingredients known or suspected to be detrimental to your health. Another great resource is the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database site, which rates popular cosmetics and personal-care products with hazard scores on a scale of 0 to 10, depending on their toxicity.
3. Say No to Fragrance
A loophole in federal law doesn't require companies to declare any of the dozens of toxic chemicals that a single product's fragrance mixture could contain. Artificial fragrances, which frequently contain phthalates, can also trigger allergic reactions and other health problems. Be mindful of the hidden dangers that "fragrance" or "parfum" listed on ingredients labels can pose, and always choose fragrance-free products.
4. Choose Nontoxic, Recyclable Packaging
You can never go wrong with glass because it's recyclable and has no danger of leaching toxins into the product contained within. As far as plastics go, polyethylene terephthalate (PET), also known by the recycling code #1, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), #2, are most frequently accepted by municipal curbside recycling programs and are considered safe; polycarbonate (#7), may leach the endocrine disruptor bisphenol-A, or BPA. Polypropylene (#5), another food-safe plastic, is also a good alternative, though less easily recycled. (To find a polypropylene recycler in your neighborhood, visit Earth911.org.)
Avoid containers that bear recycling code #3 and the letter "V", which refers to polyvinyl chloride, or PVC. Dubbed "the poison plastic," PVC poses great environmental and health hazards from manufacture to disposal. In addition to releasing hydrochloric acid, cancer-causing dioxins, and other persistent pollutants into the air, water, and land during its production, PVC also contains additives and chemical stabilizers—such as lead, cadmium, and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (a suspected carcinogen that is known to cause a host of reproductive and developmental defects)—that can leach, flake, or off-gas from the plastic throughout its life.
5. Ask How Company Values Stack Up
A skincare company is more than the sum of its products. What about its philosophy and values? Visiting a website is always enlightening; TreeHugger has also written about many beauty and personal care companies. Does the company test on animals, for example? Has it signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a pledge to remove harmful chemicals from ingredients lists and replace them with safer alternatives? How committed is it to reducing its impact on the environment?
6. Choose Organic Beauty and Grooming Products
Organic ingredients are those grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides, which is healthier for the planet and healthier for our bodies. Better yet are botanicals grown using biodynamic farming methods, which go beyond organic by emphasizing an even more holistic relationship between the soil, plants, and animals. The USDA National Organic Program has been certifying personal-care products since 2003, and an increasing number of organic skincare products now bear the USDA organic seal. To tell if a product is biodynamic-certified, look for Demeter U.S.A.'s stamp of approval on the label.
7. Sidestep the Petrochemicals
Used to make emollients for face cream or found in the form of coal tar for scalp-treatment shampoos, petroleum byproducts can be contaminated by cancer-containing impurities. A nonrenewable and environmentally unfriendly resource, petroleum barely belong in your car, let alone on your skin. Identify it on labels as petrolatum, mineral oil, and paraffin.
8. Make Your Own Green Skin Care Treatments
The best way to know exactly what goes into your skincare products? Make your own. Not only will you save money and packaging, but you'll also get the satisfaction that no preservatives or toxic chemicals were used in the process. You can whip up a simple, effective face mask using little more than bananas and powdered oats, make a antioxidant-rich tomato-and-yogurt cleanser, or create a acne-fighting toner with green tea. And that's just for starters. Check out more of our DIY skin care treatments to learn more.
9. Stay Beautiful Inside and Out by Being Healthy
You don't have to resort to a flurry of potions and lotions, chemical peels, or surgical face-lifts to get fresh, glowing skin. Diet and exercise should play vital roles in your skincare regimen, as well. Besides working up a good sweat to keep nutrient-carrying blood circulating throughout your body, be sure to feed yourself plenty of protein, healthy fats (such as omega-3 fish oils or flaxseed oils), complex carbohydrates, and fruit. Drinking six to eight glasses of water is also a boon for flushing out toxins that might otherwise show up on your skin.
10. Don't fall for exotic trends
Every now and then, a bizarre new trend promises to be the magic bullet for all your skin care woes but ends up being downright cruel, whether to you or the planet. The use of human and cow placenta extracts is at the top of our list for being kooky and just plain crazy, especially since they contain a raft of hormones that could potentially result in breast growth in toddlers, breast cancer, and other severe health issues. Another weird practice du jour is the fish pedicure, which involves having dozens of tiny nibbling carp exfoliate your feet in 94-degree Fahrenheit chemical-packed water, a procedure we’re sure is not PETA-approved.
--------
Taking care of our skin is a responsibility. We should always make sure that our skin looks healthy and glowing. On the tips above you're surely to have a youthful looking skin. Remember to drink lots of water to keep your skin hydrated, have a healthy lifestyle and exercise.

Healthier Skin During Cold Seasons
Under the cold weather, the air gets cooler and contains less moisture. So when temperatures drop, it’s even more important to take better care of your skin and change certain regimens. Here are some great advices for keeping skin healthy as the seasons begin to change.
When falling into cooler weather it’s important to prepare the skin. Skin care expert recommends exfoliating the feet, elbows and knees with salicylic acid peels to keep them soft and smooth. For your face, take Microdermabrasion treatments as an excellent way to protect the delicate skin on your face from harsher climates. Moisture is key and to protect the entire body, using a lipid-rich emollient to lock in moisture from head to toe. To protect your hair from drying out, use a silicone-based hair oil after blow-drying…simply work the oil into the last two inches of the end of the hair to keep locks looking luscious.
Winterize your skin…we recommend using Hydranorme, a lipid-rich barrier cream that holds in moisture even when temperatures drop. For chapped lips, men and women can wear lip sunscreen…women can apply underneath their favorite lip liner or lipstick. For chronic chapping, we recommend applying Cortizone 10. If symptoms persist, a visit to the dermatologist may be necessary.
When cold and flu season approaches, it’s important to keep the skin healthy when battling the sneezes, wheezes and sniffles. Use products with green tea extract, which is great for getting rid of redness. If redness persists, Cortizone 10 can be applied to the affected area. For cold sores, an antiviral prescription or trying Abreva, which may help alleviate the problem.
With fall and winter being the busiest time for holidays, people often find themselves stressed and indulging in holiday foods. During Thanksgiving, eat cranberries, which are full of antioxidants and also have a naturally mild bleaching agent for brown spots on the skin. A soy-based, vegetarian stuffing, without a lot of carbohydrates, is also good for the skin. Eat plenty of turkey, the main Thanksgiving staple, as it is high in protein, which is good for nails and hair.
It is important to adapt skin care regimens to the seasons of the year, as they each affect skin differently. With these tips, readers will be able to prepare and protect their skin for the cool weather that fall and winter bring.
--------
We should keep our skin moisturized especially during cold season because or skin tends to become dry and flaky. Always drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated. Common sense skin care prompt will help you maintain and achieve a glowing and youthful skin.

With lots of factor, the skin changes and such changes in skin are both; intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic changes can be defined as the changes appearing with ageing of body. Extrinsic changes, on the other hand, are due to external factors such as sun, smoking, gravity and improper skin care. We can’t stop any intrinsic changes since that is programmed in the body, but one can surely change the overall habits and hence, can lessen the changes because of extrinsic factors.
Why take skin care?
Let us look at the changes in skin because of the most common factor – the ageing. As it is well known that the skin has three layers namely; epidermis (outer layer), dermis (middle layer) and subcutaneous layer that is underneath the dermis. As one grows, the epidermis or the outermost layer starts beginning to become thinner. The melanocytes (kind of pigments that contain cells) decrease. Though melanocytes diminish in number they increase in sizes. This gives a kind of pale complexion to the skin. Ageing changes because of the sunrays such as liver spots or lentigo appearance. They are also known as aging spots. The blood vessels in the dermis start to lose strengths and easily turn to bruising and bleeding underneath the skin. The subcutaneous layer supporting with fat padding to skin also becomes thinner. This would again increase the risk of getting skin injuries. Both sweating gland and sebaceous gland becomes less active.
Because of aging, meeting day-by-day pollution and other irritants, the skin loses its suppleness, textures and strengths. With aging spots and other pigmentations, the look is lost and skin becomes dull. With weakening of strengths, it becomes easy for skin to get damaged easily. Healing will become very slow and amazingly, the healing is four times as slow in advanced age than to youthful years. Skin will turn dry and the senses of touch heat etc. reduce considerably. Other growths like skin tags, warts, mar the appearance foster.
Skin care tips
A facial mask of egg white and honey helps removing the tan from the face.
Mixing oats with honey, yoghurt and ground almonds is very good. One can apply this on the face, leave it for about 10 min and then wash with lukewarm water.
Cucumber is very natural cleanser. For this, one can take cucumber juice with milk and use this in place of a cleanser.
Take 1/3 -cup cocoa, 3 tsp of some moisturizing cream, 1/3 - cup ripe papaya, ¼ - cup of honey and 3 tsp of oatmeal powder. Blend them all together and then apply this mixture onto the face. After 15 min, washing the face with lukewarm water becomes beneficial especially for the oily skin.

One can simply cut the lemon and rub that all across the face. Leave it for about 15 min, and then wash it off with cold water. This refreshes the face. However, one should avoid this if having the dry skin.
Mix honey, lemons and vegetables’ oil .This mixture is a favorable moisturiser for drier skin. Apply this mask for 15 min.
One of the best remedies for skin care is to apply the mixture of honey and milk all over the face since it makes the skin glow.
One can prepare a mask. For this, mix a slice of pumpkin with egg yolks and milk. Let the mask stay on the face for about half an hour for a glowing skin.
Mix ½ cup of honey to the bathwater for softer and smoother skin.
To get soothing body pack, prepare a paste out of mint leaf and fresh almonds. Mix it with lukewarm water and apply on the body. Leave it till it gets dried and rinse with lukewarm water.
Buttermilk dabbing onto the skin for 20 min soaks up oil from the skin without making it dry.
Carrot juice can also be applied to get rid of daily fades and/or blemishes.
If one has dark underarms and neck, applying lemon juice blended with cucumber juice and a little bit of turmeric daily is beneficial. Leave this there for about half an hour before rinsing.
If one wants to remove facial hair, application of a sticky paste of egg white mixed up with sugar and corn flour gives favorable results.

The Truth about Stretch Marks
by Joanne Elliott
What is a stretch mark?
Stretch marks (or Striae Gravidarum) is a term that refers to the scars on your skin which are caused damage to the elastic fibres that help skin stretch. Stretch marks are perfectly normal, and most women - and even some men - have them!
What do stretch marks look like?
Depending on your skin color, stretch marks start out as pink, reddish brown, brown, or very dark brown streaks. After time they can fade to a more silvery color thats lighter than your other skin.
Where do they normally happen on your body?
They can happen anywhere on your body, but are most common on hips, breasts and buttocks.
How can I avoid getting stretch marks?
Whether you get them or not is simply a matter of genetics that is, how elastic your skin is. Theres nothing you can do, so dont worry about it either way!
Does cream help?
Many women use various types of creams, lotions, and oils to try to prevent stretch marks from forming. Unfortunately, while such products soothe and soften the skin, there is no medical evidence to prove that they actually work! So beware of advertisers trying to sell you expensive products claiming that they prevent stretch marks!
This said, there is some new medical research which shows that some specific creams may be able to help the appearance of stretch marks. Apparently, using 0.1 percent Tretinoin cream (commonly known by the trade name Retin-A) on stretch marks will slightly reduce the length and width of stretch marks.
(N.B. As this is a new development, Tretinoin should not be used during pregnancy or breast feeding).
Laser Therapy
Laser therapy can also help improve the appearance of stretch marks. This is where a surgeon uses different types of lasers, depending on the color of the stretch marks. Traditionally, one type reduces the color of dark stretch marks, the other stimulates the production of pigment-making cells in already faded stretch marks. There is an even newer type of laser therapy that can also be used help the body produce collagen to help restore the elasticity of the skin in depressed stretch marks. This is a very serious and expensive route to follow. You would need to talk your decision through fully with a skin specialist before making a final decision.
--------
Everybody hates stretch marks, but there are laser treatment now! Yehey! This is a major problem encountered by newly given birth mothers, there are lots of lotions and creams you can use to prevent having stretch marks which is safe for your baby but first you should consult your physician before using any of these creams and lotions.
